Academics

The South Allegheny Elementary School offers a rich learning environment to the students.

  • READING:  A new reading series by McMillan has been implemented this year.  It includes a rigorous curriculum that encompasses reading, language, writing and spelling. In addition to the reading series, teachers in grade 2 and 3 are learning about DIBLES. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills.

  • SCIENCE:   The study of physical, life and earth science through hands on experiences are still the focus through renting STC and FOSS modules from ASSET Inc.

  • MATH:  Teachers spend time in team meeting discussing current strategies that align performance assessments with curriculum and PA standards.  Formative and summative assessments help teachers use differentiated instructional methods.

  • BULLY PROGRAM:  Character education and bullying is a priority in our school.  Manuals have been purchased so teachers can implement lessons and use ‘teachable moments’ to discuss bullying.  A Character Education committee meets monthly on ways to implement the word of the month.  Students displaying knowledge of the word of the month through acts of kindness have their name displayed in the cafeteria.

  • MUSIC, ART, P.E.:  The Arts are also a focus this year with the beginning of a district wide Art Show that includes band, chorus, movement and artistic design.  Look for this to occur in March.

  • LIBRARY:  The library curriculum has been updated so students have hands on experience learning reference skills.

  • PARENT WORKSHOPS:  Monthly workshops are being designed to keep parents updated with programs.  Informational and interactive workshops include PSSA information, Reading Strategies and Helping in Math.

For questions about any of our programs, please call the school to set up an informational meeting or tour of facilities.
