Classrooms for the Future

  •   In 2007, South Allegheny recently received a grant from the PA Department of Education for over $180,000 to purchase equipment to help reform our high school instruction to prepare students for the future by using cutting-edge equipment and software.

This grant allowed the district to purchase:

  • 196 new student laptops
  • 8 new teacher laptops
  • 7 laptop carts
  • 7 printer/scanners
  • 7 webcams
  • 7 sets of speakers
  • 3 digital video cameras
  • 3 digital still cameras
  • 7 Promethean Activboards
  • 12 multimedia projectors
  • 14 wireless access points

The grant also provided $6000 in funds to upgrade our existing network infrastructure to accomodate the new equipment.  This allowed the district to purchase 2 additional network switches and 12 projector mounting kits.

The grant provided additional funding for a technology coach.  The purpose of the coach is help teachers feel comfortable enough with the new technology to regularly use it in the classroom.  The coach helps teachers by providing resources and ideas for the new equipment as well as assisting them with problems and supporting them through the changes.

In 2008, funding was cut state-wide by 50%.  South Allegheny applied for continuation funding in the amount of $180,713.  The amount received was $43,413.   This amount, although less than expected, allowed the district to purchase:

  • 9 Promethean Activboards
  • 14 Wireless access points
  • 30 Student laptops
  • 1 Student laptop cart
  • 12 Teacher laptops w/ builtin webcams
  • 3 Mulitimedia projectors
