Newbery Medal
|
Annually since 1922, the Newbery Medal has been awarded by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published. These chapter books are great for adult readers also. The Newbery Winner Reading Program at the South Allegheny Literacy Center was established to encourage students, residents, and staff members to read all the Newbery Winners of their lifetime. Since the award began in 1922, everyone can accept this challenge. Once a reader has completed the medal winners of their lifetime, their name is inscribed on the "Distinguished Reader" plaque and the reader receives a "Distinguished Reader" medal. The program started June 11, 2009. There were 8 summer meetings. Currently there are over 30 members and 4 readers have been honored as "Distinguished Readers". The program will continue monthly through May 2010.
