There were eight meetings over the summer for the Newbery Reading Program. Readers came from 6:00-7:00, chose books, and then gathered for discussion. Over 30 readers, ranging in ages from 10-70, participated in the summer reading program and accepted the challenge of reading the Newbery winners of their lifetime. Readers include students, residents, and SA staff.

On August 27th 2009, four readers met their goal. They were honored by having their names inscribed on the Distinguished Reader plaque and received Distinguised Reader Medals. The plaque is displayed in the SAE Library.
