  • English Department Vision Statement: As an English Department, our goal is to prepare each student with a background in world literature, as well as a solid foundation in language skills, which includes grammar, speaking, and writing skills.  Our focus will be preparation for post secondary education and/or practical communication for the working environment.

    Description: This course encompasses several different areas of study.  The students will review basic grammar skills and reading and writing skills including an emphasis on different genres of literature.  Also included will be an analysis of the selections chosen and the historical significance of each.

     Description: This course is for the college-bound student who excels in reading and writing skills.  The class requires students to work independently at an accelerated rate; therefore, a student must maintain a C average to receive the additional weighted credit.   Selections studied, including short stories, novels, poetry, and drama, will explore a variety of genres.  Oral presentations and expository writing will also be a focus.  Summer assignments may be a core component.

    Description: This course is designed for all liberal and practical students who plan to enter the work force, a vocational school, or the military service and want to increase their knowledge of the fundamentals of language, writing, and communication skills.  Emphasis is placed on literature appreciation and the process of composing a research paper culminating to a final product. Through an integrated approach, this course combines reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with the applied communication competency-based curriculum.

    Description: This course is designed for students who desire to develop strong English skills in preparation for the college experience.  Emphasis is placed on an appreciation of literature where students will be encouraged to develop effective analytical and interpretive skills.  An integrated approach will be used to enhance grammar and writing skills with the emphasis placed upon improving methods of research utilizing the MLA/APA research formats.  The student will study thematic essays, fiction and nonfiction novels, short stories, poems, and drama.

    Description: This course is designed for intense preparation of mature college bound students who excel in reading, writing, knowledge of grammar, and understanding of literary techniques.  These students will enhance their higher level analytical, interpretive, and critical thinking skills.  Emphasis is placed on extensive out-of-class reading and writing assignments.  Writing assignments are related to the literature studied and incorporate MLA research skills.  Emphasis is placed upon encompassing fiction and nonfiction novels, poetry, drama, essays, and short stories.  This course is designed to prepare the student for the Advanced Placement Literature and Composition test.

Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing.
