  • SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR

The John Stinner Memorial Student-Athlete Scholarship is sponsored by Jon Pons, SAHS Class of 1998.  Mr. Pons played 3 years of varsity football at South Allegheny, starring as a running back and a defensive back, gaining nearly 1,600 yards rushing his senior year.  Mr. Pons went on to start for the Presidents at Washington & Jefferson College and is currently a supervisor at Covidien.

  • SCHOLARSHIP MISSION

John Stinner was a dedicated athlete at South Allegheny.  He fought hard and was, pound-for-pound, one of the toughest Gladiators to grace the field at Glassport Memorial Stadium.  Stinner was a two-year starter at cornerback and running back in his time with the Gladiators, often shutting down the top receivers on other teams and contributing highlight hits in run support.  John also starred on the SA Track team in his varsity years and was one of the top pole vaulters in the history of the school.  Regardless of the sport, John was a unique teammate and his hard-nosed style had a big influence on his younger teammates, one of which is sponsoring this special student-athlete scholarship in his honor.  John Stinner was taken from this earth too early, passing away in the Fall of 1996, while he was attending Frostburg State University.
