PRIDE IN OUR PAST
In the fall of 1927, the Copperweld Steel Company established its headquarters and manufacturing in Glassport. The wire produced in Glassport helped build bridges, telephone lines, railroad connectors, nails, staples, barbed wire, and other products. During the Second World War, Copperweld wires and other products were of high demand by the United States Army Signal Corps and helped to develop the lines of communication that helped the United States and our Allies triumph. From the end of the Second World War until 1976, Copperweld witnessed expansion into other areas. In 1976, it became the first American company to be taken over by a foreign company, Societie Imetal based in France. By 1978, Copperweld’s association with Glassport was unfortunately ended.
Copperweld’s legacy still exists in Glassport. In 1938, a group of Copperweld Steel Company’s employees joined together to form the Copperweld Credit Union. The Copperweld Credit Union served its members with loans, banking services, and other financial actions. In 1998, the Copperweld Credit Union changed its name to the Copper & Glass Federal Credit Union. It maintains its presence in Glassport to this day and is a community leader.
The Copper & Glass Federal Credit Union is a proud contributor to community functions. In conjunction with the South Allegheny Alumni Association, the Copper & Glass Federal Credit Union is pleased to announce its sponsorship of the first Pride In Our Past Scholarship dedicated towards South Allegheny School District seniors from the Class of 2018.
