English Department Vision Statement
 
As an English Department, our goal is to prepare each student with a background in world literature, as well as a solid foundation in language skills, which includes grammar, speaking, and writing skills.  Our focus will be preparation for post secondary education and/or practical communication for the working environment.

Description
 
This course encompasses several different areas of study.  The students will review basic grammar skills and reading and writing skills including an emphasis on different genres of literature.  Also included will be an analysis of the selections chosen and the historical significance of each.

Description
 
This course is designed for students who desire to develop strong English skills in preparation for the college/post secondary school experience.  Emphasis is placed on developing reading and writing skills, and students should have a solid foundation in both.  The class requires students to work independently at an accelerated rate. Selections studied, including short stories, novels, poetry, and drama, will explore a variety of genres.  Oral presentations and expository writing will also be a focus.  Summer assignments may be a core component.

This course is for the college-bound student who excels in reading and writing skills.  The class requires students to work independently at an accelerated rate; therefore, a student must maintain a C average to receive the additional weighted credit.   Selections studied, including short stories, novels, poetry, and drama, will explore a variety of genres. Oral presentations and expository writing will also be a focus.  Summer assignments may be a core component.

Emphasis is placed on literature appreciation and the writing process. Through an integrated approach, this course combines reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with the applied communication competency-based curriculum.

Description
 
An AP course in English Language and Composition engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing.

Description
 
This course is designed for intense preparation of mature college bound students who excel in reading, writing, knowledge of grammar, and understanding of literary techniques.  These students will enhance their higher level analytical, interpretive, and critical thinking skills.  Emphasis is placed on extensive out-of-class reading and writing assignments.  Writing assignments are related to the literature studied and incorporate MLA/APA research skills.  Emphasis is placed upon encompassing fiction and nonfiction novels, poetry, drama, essays, and short stories.  This course is designed to prepare the student for the Advanced Placement Literature and Composition test.

Young Adult Literature I

Description
 
This elective is an introduction to the multiple genres of contemporary young adult literature. Students will read a range of novels from award-winning authors that will address a variety of topics. Independent reading will be required and the class will be discussion-based. Students will be expected to complete lengthy reading assignments over a short time period. Writing reflections, as well as research on each novel, will be a focus in the elective. Students should be willing to read independently, respond in writing to the text, and discuss/support their opinions with the class.
Young Adult Literature II

Description
 
This course will be an extension of Young Adult Literature and will continue to explore the relationship between literature and today’s culture.  The course will promote the development of reading comprehension by providing a diverse array of contemporary literature in both fiction and nonfiction and among a variety of genres.  Discussion and written assignments will focus on the connection between literature and how it represents pop culture, diverse cultures, and the world around the students.  Students will analyze literary elements such as point of view, plot, characterization, symbolism, allusion, etc. while it motivates students to become life-long readers who read with a higher level of understanding and deeper meaning. 
Journalism I

Description
 
Journalism I will introduce students to the basic skills needed to write, photograph, and design for print and online publications. Students will be actively engaged in reading and creating articles which focus on current events, local and national issues, personalities, culture, and entertainment. A foundation in ethics, freedoms, and biases in writing will be addressed. Students will be expected to conduct interviews, meet deadlines, and create a culminating project.
Journalism II

Description
 
Journalism II is a collaborative semester course which applies and extends the principles taught in Journalism I. Students will be expected to conduct interviews, meet deadlines, and create and update a recurring publication. The course will focus on the collecting, planning, editing, and the proofing process in the creation of their product. 
Introduction to Public Speaking

Description
 
Introduction to Public Speaking is an elective course specifically designed for ninth grade students that focuses on reducing the fear of public speaking and growing confidence in the students’ public speaking ability. This elective will address the causes of the anxiety students feel when required to speak in different situations and lessons will center on the skills needed to do so successfully. Students will be taught the proper delivery techniques, how to organize their ideas, and ways to enhance their presentations that will ultimately build their confidence and strengthen their writing and speaking skills. Students will learn to adapt their presentations to a variety of audiences and situations. 
Public Speaking

Description
 
This course is an elective and introduction to speech communication, open to grades 10-12, which emphasizes the practical skill of public speaking, including techniques to lessen speaker anxiety, and the use of visual aids to enhance speaker presentations. The course prepares students for a variety of academic and other situations in which formal presentations are required. In conjunction, the course will give students the opportunity to develop and strengthen skills in preparing and presenting public oral presentations in a variety of situations. Students will also learn how to conduct research and correctly cite sources.
 
Argument and Debate

Description
 
Argument and Debate is designed to develop students’ ability to present and support logical, researched, arguments. Argumentation is often defined as the study of practical reasoning and the process of justifying decisions in the presence of opposition. Debate is an academic and political tool used for helping audiences understand the difference between competing factual, legal, value, and policy positions. Students will leave this class with the skills to research, cite, and present ideas and arguments in a clear and purposeful manner. Students will learn the valuable skills of argumentation that will assist them with their educational careers and beyond.
