Head Wrestling Coach — Boys & Girls Wrestling Programs, Grades 7–12

The South Allegheny School District is seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, and highly motivated Head Wrestling Coach to lead the District’s entire wrestling program for grades 7-12, including both the boys’ and girls’ wrestling programs.

The Head Wrestling Coach will serve as the overall leader of the South Allegheny Wrestling Program and will be responsible for the vision, direction, development, culture, and success of the program. The Head Wrestling Coach will oversee and work collaboratively with separate boys’ and girls’ coaching staffs, ensuring that both programs operate under a unified philosophy and standard of excellence.

The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, an exceptional work ethic, enthusiasm for the sport, and the ability to build a successful program through recruitment, athlete development, retention, staff development, and perseverance.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Head Wrestling Coach and overall leader of the South Allegheny Wrestling Program for grades 7–12.
  • Oversee and provide leadership for both the boys’ and girls’ wrestling programs.
  • Establish the overall vision, philosophy, expectations, and long-term goals for South Allegheny Wrestling.
  • Work closely with the separate boys’ and girls’ coaches to ensure consistency, communication, accountability, and development throughout the program.
  • Provide leadership and direction to all members of the wrestling coaching staff.
  • Recruit and recommend qualified assistant coaching candidates for hire in accordance with South Allegheny School District policies and procedures.
  • Help develop a coaching staff that shares the vision, values, expectations, and goals of the overall wrestling program.
  • Actively recruit and retain student-athletes within the South Allegheny School District.
  • Develop strategies to increase participation and create a program that students want to be part of.
  • Establish a strong pipeline and continuity between the middle school and high school wrestling programs.
  • Develop wrestlers at every level, from beginners through varsity athletes.
  • Establish a positive, disciplined, competitive, and team-oriented culture.
  • Develop effective offseason programs, camps, clinics, youth opportunities, conditioning, and athlete-development initiatives.
  • Oversee practices, competitions, tournaments, postseason activities, and other wrestling-related events.
  • Build positive relationships with student-athletes, families, school administration, faculty, and the South Allegheny community.
  • Promote academic achievement, sportsmanship, accountability, discipline, character, and personal development.
  • Evaluate the needs of the program and make recommendations regarding coaching staff, equipment, training, scheduling, and other resources.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work through challenges, persevere, and remain committed to building the program for the long term.

Leadership Expectations

The Head Wrestling Coach must understand that this position is not simply the head coach of one team. This individual will be responsible for leading the entire South Allegheny Wrestling Program, including both boys’ and girls’ wrestling from grades 7-12.

The Head Coach will be expected to establish a unified program philosophy while allowing the separate boys’ and girls’ coaches to manage the day-to-day responsibilities of their respective teams. The Head Coach will provide overall leadership, direction, accountability, and support to both coaching staffs.

  • Has a proven understanding of wrestling and athlete development.
  • Has the ability to recruit, develop, and retain student-athletes.
  • Has the leadership skills necessary to oversee both boys’ and girls’ wrestling programs.
  • Can identify, recruit, and recommend quality assistant coaches.
  • Understands the importance of building relationships with athletes, families, coaches, and the community.
  • Is willing to invest the time and effort necessary to build a successful program.
  • Understands that building a successful wrestling program is a long-term process requiring commitment, consistency, patience, and perseverance.
  • Is willing to work through adversity and remain committed to the athletes and the program.
  • Can establish high expectations while maintaining a positive, respectful, and supportive environment.
  • Understands that success begins with building a strong foundation at the 7th-grade level and continues through the high school varsity program.
