My Home Page - Program Description
Annually since 1922, the Newbery Medal has been awarded by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published. These chapter books are great for adult readers also. The Newbery Winner Reading Program at the South Allegheny Literacy Center was established to encourage students, residents, and staff members to read all the Newbery Winners of their lifetime. Since the award began in 1922, everyone can accept this challenge. Once a reader has completed the medal winners of their lifetime, their name is inscribed on the "Distinguished Reader" plaque and the reader receives a "Distinguished Reader" medal.
The program started June 11, 2009. On May 15, 2014 the plaque and program were completed with 38 names inscribed. Two additional plates for "distinguished readers" were needed and added to the original plaque of 36. Notable in the list of names were a brother and sister and a mother and daughter. Congratulations to all 38 readers!
The Newbery Distinguished Reader Club always met in the South Allegheny Elementary Library. It evolved from evening meetings to meetings in the mornings from 8:00-9:00 A.M. One element always remained the same - the passion and love for books.
